Ledford says eventually they hope to create “a virtual reality experience based around CAPSat.”ĭescribing his class, Ledford says, “It’s very multi-disciplinary.

Ledford also says his class is “partnering with an informatics class that focuses on game design so we’re going to have a game that has to do with CAPSat.”Īdvertising Professor Mike Yao is teaching a class on virtual reality and how to use it to promote products. Working on outreach, journalism professor Charles “Stretch” Ledford is teaching JOUR 460, a class for students interested in covering CAPSat. Not only are students writing news articles about CAPSat, they are also creating video stories, a website, and eventually a short documentary about the subject. Patrick Haddox is a PhD student in Aerospace Engineering and serves as the graduate advisor for the group. McKale Berg, junior in Aerospace Engineering, is the undergraduate team leader for CAPSat. The bus is the main infrastructure of the satellite that allows the satellite to travel while holding the payloads. Junior Dawn Haken of Electrical Engineering is the bus leader. Physics Professor Paul Kwiat oversees the annealing portion, while Joe Stahl, a senior in Computer Science, is the leader with help from the University of Waterloo. Professor Alexander Ghosh of the Aerospace Department directs the cooling payload while Tiago Silva, graduate student in Aerospace Engineering takes the lead. ISE’s Professor James Allison guides the pointing payload experiment, while Aerospace Engineering Senior Yukti Kathuria is the pointing payload lead. The project stretches across different departments at Illinois and even different universities. The satellite’s experiments involve cooling, annealing and pointing, abbreviated as CAPSat. Three experiments will occur on the CubeSat. It also allows humanities students to create a website with stories, a game and even a virtual reality experience to cover CubeSat. The project gives undergraduate students real-world research experience. University of Illinois students are designing a small satellite, or CubeSat, after winning an award for funding from NASA. It is intended to allow students who could not test at school the opportunity to compete for this prestigious scholarship. Alternate Entry is only available to students who did not take the test in October or January. Can students apply for Alternate Entry if they already took the PSAT in October or January? This will offer you the best chance to earn a top test score. If you are applying for the scholarship through Alternate Entry, you should begin preparing for the SAT now and plan to take the test at least twice before the June 2021 deadline. Students applying through Alternate Entry have an advantage because they have multiple chances to take the SAT and boost their scores. What can students do to maximize their chances to earn the National Merit Scholarship if they intend to apply through Alternate Entry? To account for this difference in scoring, the NMSC will cap SAT scores at a maximum of 38 for each section. On the PSAT, the maximum test score for each section is 38, but on the SAT, the maximum test score for each section is 40. For students taking the PSAT, the Selection Index is the sum of the student’s test scores for reading, writing, and math multiplied by two. When determining scholarship eligibility, the NMSC calculates a Selection Index. How will the NMSC compare PSAT scores and SAT scores to determine scholarship eligibility? Next, students must take the SAT by June 2021 and request that the College Board send official scores to NMSC. Students who did not take the PSAT on EITHER test date may submit SAT scores in lieu of PSAT scores.įirst, students must complete the Alternate Entry Form available on the NMSC website by April 1, 2021. Yes! The National Merit Scholarship Corporation offers alternate entry for the scholarship competition. Can I still compete for the National Merit Scholarship if I didn’t get to take the PSAT this year? The College Board offered a second test date in January, but with rising case numbers, some students were also unable to take advantage of this additional test date. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many students were unable to take the PSAT in October.
